Adhering strictly to its declared policy of environmental care and fuel efficiency, Volvo Trucks has recently organized a FuelWatch Competition (FWC) 2013 at Hosakote near Bangalore. The annual competition, which culminated with the presentation of awards, was organized for the tipper drivers with an objective of bringing out the best teamwork of men and machine to achieve the highest fuel efficiency, productivity and safe driving practices.
Indeed, the environmental care is one of the most critical issues that concern everybody including manufacturers, operators and authorities directly connected to transportation. At Volvo Trucks, Care for Environment is one of the core values which translate into technology of its products, aftermarket services and soft-offerings. Being one of the leading construction vehicles manufacturers, Volvo believes that it is its responsibility to ensure that concern for environmental care extends to operations of its customers, drivers and technicians.
To begin with, the company started an annual fuel efficiency contest for mining tipper drivers in India three years ago in 2010. The program was aimed at creating awareness about the best driving practices and its advantage to reduce fuel consumption among customers, drivers, site managers and service engineers. Moreover, the Volvo FWC in its effort to make everyone connected with mining transport to understand the importance of environmental care, safety and productivity through technologically advanced tippers, high quality vehicle maintenance and best driving practices. This resulted in proving that the difference of fuel consumption achieved by the best driver and an average driver is up to 15%, which means a driver alone can help reduce fuel consumption by 15% and help reduce environmental impact. Volvo FWC has also created an opportunity for Indian Drivers to participate in Asia FWC and compete with drivers from different Asian countries.
According to the senior officials of the company, Volvo India will keep looking towards developing fuel-efficient solutions through its on- and off-highway tipper trucks and tractor trailers. Volvo's on- and off- highway tipper trucks and tractors moving break bulk over dimensional project cargoes are well positioned in delivering fuel efficiency as being equipped with high fuel efficient engines. However, better fuel and operational efficiency could be obtained through necessary driver development programmes that focus on operation and vehicle maintenance.
