Bauma China 2006 Innovation and Size Well Displayed

The lone character of Bauma China 2006 was all encompassing as it displayed both large capacity equipment added with equipment having modish features to be employed for construction applications having unconventional character. This was discovered out by P. P. Basistha & M.A. Faridi, as they browsed through the show.

Bauma China 2006 was held from 21st to 24th November 2006 at Shanghai’s, New International Expo Centre in the city’s Pudong business district. The show was characterized by its sheer size that showcased large number of construction equipment and machineries along with display of supporting systems involving, spares and components for the machineries and infrastructure support systems for the construction industry itself.

It was a mammoth event spread over a total area of 140,000 square meters where 1,088 exhibitors from 30 countries had displayed their products and services. Bauma China 2006 had attracted more than 80,000 visitors from all over the world which is 60% more than Bauma China 2004.

“We are very satisfied with the number of visitors, especially the international visitors,” states Zhou Fugui, Vice President, SANY. “Bauma China has become an outstanding platform for us to present our products and corporate image. Visitors included both distributors and end users. Bauma China is the truly leading construction machinery show in the Asian market,” said Qiu Pu, Deputy General Manager, HITACHI Construction Machinery Co. Ltd.

According to couple of observers from construction industry visiting the event, the show would have been best described as construction equipment industry exposition, which passed the message, that there lies something more through which a construction equipment can define itself. Though being technically refined, enables a machinery to characterize itself. But moreover, a machinery can also characterize itself through the feature of its large size and capacity it posses and array of newer applications, it can deliver for the construction industry.

And true enough, Bauma China 2006 was the venue that provided requisite thrust to the new dimension of interpreting and understanding a construction machinery, and drove the concerned information well among visitors.

Innovative Products Provide Dimension

Bauma China 2006 was really marked as an event that show displayed number of construction equipment machinery for newer construction applications. The equipment displayed have been made for dual output to deliver new construction applications and simultaneously have a qualitative work output. Prominent among this was Swedish company, Brokk. The company displayed its portable robotized machines for undertaking demolitions inside buildings. The remarkable feature of the machine is that, it can be equipped with a crusher and can work during business hours in buildings with stringent noise restrictions. The machine while working emits much less dust and vibration than the traditional method.

Providing details of the machine, Mr. Jonas Stahlbage, Area Manager, Asia Pacific for Brook mentioned, that the equipment can work well with attachments consisting, hammers, swing attachment, concrete crushers, buckets and rotators. Brook machines which are remote controlled driven have no exhaust emissions and have low noise, greater hitting power along with features of accessibility and precise operation. The machine can also be used for cleaning cement kilns and demolishing brick linings.

Innovated product was also displayed by Meyco Equipment through its machines, division of BASF construction of Switzerland. Meyco exhibited its concrete spraying equipment in tunnels and areas which are inaccessible. Mr. Tom Kurth, General Manager of the company explained that the machine is best suited for spraying concrete in tunneling sites, building pits, slope stabilization, mining operations and hydro power projects.

The machine is suitable to use anywhere where large quantity of sprayed concrete are to be applied in the fastest and efficient manner possible. The machine is equipped with features consisting, central power and electrical control unit, four wheel drive with steers and stabilizers, water storage tanks, air compressor, high pressure water cleaner etc. he added.

Another novel product was exhibited by Australian company Trimble. The company displayed its grade control systems for excavators, laser based system for grading and excavating and site positioning systems.

The unanimous feature of these measurement equipment are, as for the site positioning systems is that it can enable the contractor undertake in site preparation, heavy highway work mining landfill and waste disposal work with accuracy enabled through a GPS or total stations system. While for the grade control system for the excavators, angle sensors are used that measure the relationship between the body, boom, stick and bucket to determine where the cutting edge is and should be directing the operator to the desired depth and slope, so as to have accurate and quality excavation work.

Product featured with modern concept was exhibited by Italian company, Davino. The company showed its portable ready mix concrete mixers. The unique feature of the mixer is that being portable, it can easily be maneuvered and used in congested areas of construction involving urban areas, having heavy vehicular traffic or otherwise. The machine can be stated to be ideally useful in urban areas construction sites in India. Probably, in construction sites in Delhi which is undergoing through metro railway construction.

Providing inputs on the features and functional mechanism of the machine, Dr. Domenico D’ Avino, International Sales Director and Mr. Angelo Zaverella from the international sales department of the company stated that the machines are four wheeled and have a large capacity loading bucket and powerful hydraulics which reduces the loading time. The shape of the bucket itself being coned and one piece ensures loading materials into the drum is smoother and doesn’t require tapping or shaking even if the materials are somewhat humid. The bucket is directly connected to the lifting arm which is directly connected to the chassis producing smooth action and ensuring that the concrete is homogeneous. The machine has an automatic control system enabling the operator to administer the movements.

A very similar product was demonstrated by another Italian company, Carmix. Describing the features of the product, Maneula. R. Galante, Marketing personnel, of the company stated, what makes the machine different from others having similar nature is the machine is four wheeled drive. This enables the machine to climb fully loaded over steep gradient. Apart from this, the blade fitted in the shovel of the machine ensures that the breaking of cement bags with no waste. Moreover, the machine has facilities to slew the drum at 300 degrees enabling to pour around four sides of the vehicle at over 2m of height.

Other new flanged range of products displayed at the show having similar characteristic was displayed by Spanish company, Ausa, who displayed its portable dumpers at a range of 9 tons. The company also exhibited forklifts. The attributes of the machines is that they can perform on rough and difficult terrain.

Among these, the concern that made its mark in showcasing a wide range of product belonging to the similar product chain was, German company, BHS Sonthofen. The company displayed its twin shaft batch mixer and also provided information about its other range of products for concrete mixing and crushing involving, twin shaft continuous mixer, single shaft continuous mixer, mobile plants, stationary plants, special mixing plants, VSI rotor impact mill, VSI rotor centrifugal crusher, rotor shredder etc.

Mentioning about the BHS Sonthofen manufactured machines, Dr. Christ of Kemmann, Managing Director of the company and also the President of VDMA, German Engineering Association, stated that the machines have low energy consumption, and is designed with rugged features to have a long service life and also to have low risk and down time. He informed that the company has a complete system of providing spare parts and after-sales service.

The colossal size of the exposition was in synonym with the large capacity equipment displayed along with series of new launches made. In accordance with this, China based Sany Heavy Industry made a mark of its large presence through displaying its array of large capacity crawler cranes. The company also showcased its other range of products involving hydraulic tracked excavators, asphalt pavers, hydrostatic motor graders, truck mounted concrete pump and trailer concrete pump etc.

In line of displaying large capacity equipment, Chinese company, Guangxi LiuGong Machinery Co. Ltd. also made its presence felt. The company displayed its large capacity range wheeled loaders. Prominent among which was the wheeled loader with an operating load of 8,000 kg and operating weight of 28,500 kg along with rated power of 310 hp. LiuGong also showed its excavators loaders, compactors, motor graders, pavers, and backhoe loaders. Making its mark was also Chinese company Changlin Company Limited of the J&Y Group. The company exhibited its wide range of wheeled loaders, motor graders, compactors etc.

Mr. Wice Li, Director Overseas Department of J&Y said that Bauma China has opened a new era for the Cooperation in Construction industry between India and China as J&Y is top five among the China construction machines. And this event proved to be good opportunity for the bilateral communication.

"I have met lot of friends from India at Changlin and HBG stall there. They were all highly evaluated. Even some of them took time to look at Changlin facilities which will strengthen their future requirements."

In the segment of road building machinery, there was display and launch of 22 tonne class single drum roller, the BW 222 D4 by Bomag. The segment also witnessed display of large capacity machines. Bomag also represented other section of its product range involving four–stroke tampers and plates, light weight tandem rollers and heavy tandem and single drum rollers.

While in the segment of road machinery, US based, Power Curbers provided information about the 5700- SUPER-B, a slip former for the curb, gutter and highway safety barrier applications. The machine is fitted with a 99 kW engine-adding 50 percent more capacity than the previous model which increases its trimming and pouring capabilities.

The important feature of the machine is that its auger is fully enclosed and holds enough concrete to get through a tight radius without delays caused by repositioning the ready mix truck. Road construction machinery was also displayed by Dynapac. The company displayed its pavers, road milling machines and rollers.

Machinery having refined technical features enabling to have a qualitative work output was also from the stable of Sandvik, who displayed its H3800 cone crusher, which features hydraulic adjustment as standard, with an automation option and a choice of seven different crushing chambers. The company also displayed its P and S series horizontal shaft impact HIS crushers, which features of a robust motor and numerous advanced features.

The company also exhibited a Fintec 1107 tracked primary jaw crusher. Fintec is a joint venture between Sandvik and Finlay BME of United Kingdom. The company has been producing mobilescreening units and is now expanding into mobile crushers. The 1107 is equipped with Sandvik’s J11 single toggie jaw crusher. Its output ranges from 80 to 400 tonnes per hour, and the feed opening is 1100 mm x 700 mm. Sandvik also displayed its range of complementary rock tools, which included systems for top hammer, DTH and rotary drilling, raise boring and a large number of tools systems of soft rock and minerals.

Equipment featuring large capacity was also from the segment of cranes. This was best displayed by crane major Manitowoc crane group. Manitowoc demonstrated its wide range of large capacity of tower cranes, crawler cranes, ringer and wagon cranes. The crane segment was also well represented by Kobelco. The company displayed its high capacity cranes. Kobelco also displayed its range of wheeled loaders and excavators belonging to the 20 tonne and 30 tonne class. While Liebherr displayed 48 tonne R954 crawler excavator featured with fuel efficient engines. Liebherr also displayed its 37 tonne and 27 tonne excavators. The company had occupied 2000 square meter area, one of the largest to display its range of products.

The segment of loaders and excavators was well represented by JCB. The company displayed its wide range of wheeled loaders and excavators. While Volvo displayed its products range pertaining to excavators, loaders, haulers, and graders, the company also showed it’s newly launched G930 grader. The G930 is small in Volvo’s grader range. The machine is equipped with a 145 kW engine and weighs 15.6 tonnes. Excavators and loaders segment was also well represented by Daewoo. The company showed range of loaders and excavators manufactured by it.

And concurrently, size was added to the event by large number of spares, machines, and components manufacturers displaying their products. Prominent among which included,

Cummins, Timken, Mico Incorporated, Donaldson Fitters, Hydronix Limited, IHC Hydrohammer, Hydrocontrol SPA, Miba and many others.
