World Bank pushes Rs.1,000 cr in water transport

Injecting a major booster to the water transport infrastructure of the north-eastern region, the World Bank has recently initiated a process of financing projects to modernize inland water transport in Assam. In this connection, state transport minister Chandra Mohan Patowary recently held a meeting with representatives from the World Bank. In a move to modernize the inland water transport in the state, the World Bank has cleared Rs 1,000 crore aid for development of necessary water infrastructure including its water terminals, river front and jetties. The meeting also dwelled in detail for the development of five port cities at Jogighopa, Neamatighat, Dibrugarh, Biswanath and Silchar to convert them into a world class multi-modal hub with increase storage and cargo handling facility, claimed an official spokesperson.
