Maintenance of Infrastructure a Lifecycle Responsibility

The true strength of a nation’s engineering capability is reflected not only in how quickly it builds, but in how consistently it preserves what is built.

India is building new infrastructure at a pace faster than ever before. National highways have expanded beyond 1.4 lakh km, metro networks are entering Tier II cities, new airports and expressways are being commissioned every year, and large tunnel and bridge projects are reshaping regional connectivity. The projects are ambitious, the timelines aggressive, and the momentum undeniable. But as the nation builds at record speed, a critical question is beginning to echo across boardrooms, construction sites, and engineering circles: Are we taking care of the infrastructure we create?

This concern surfaced sharply during our recent industry feature (October 2025): “Does the L1 Bidding System Need a Reset? A Question That Can No Longer Be Ignored.” In interviews that were meant to focus on tendering practices, many contractors and developers instinctively shifted the conversation to something deeper –– maintenance. They warned that India’s infrastructure challenges do not end with aggressive pricing or thin margins; they often begin after the inauguration cameras leave.
