Indian Railways Approves Rs 270 Crore Kavach Deployment on 631 km of East Coast Railway

Railway-corridor
Indian Railways has approved the installation of Kavach, its indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, on 631 route kilometres of East Coast Railway at a cost of Rs 270 crore, further strengthening railway safety through advanced indigenous technology.

The project will cover six key sections of East Coast Railway: Baghuapal–Budhapank, Haridaspur–Paradeep, Khurda Road–Balangir, Naupada–Gunupur, Lanjigarh Road–Junagarh and Bobbili–Salur.

The sanctioned work forms part of Indian Railways' nationwide programme to deploy Kavach with an LTE-based communication backbone across critical rail corridors. Kavach is designed to prevent signal passing at danger (SPAD), over-speeding and train collisions by continuously monitoring train movements and automatically applying brakes when required.

The system will enhance operational safety, improve train reliability during adverse weather conditions such as dense fog, and support smoother passenger and freight operations across Odisha and neighbouring regions.

The project is another step in Indian Railways’ ongoing mission to expand Kavach coverage across high-density and strategically important routes to improve safety, efficiency and network reliability.
