Indian Railways Spends Rs 1.15 Lakh Crore in FY27 Till July; Kavach Covers 2,633 Route Km
Safety-related expenditure has more than tripled from Rs. 39,200 crore in 2013-14 to Rs. 1,20,389 crore in 2026-27, reflecting Indian Railways' continued focus on reducing accidents through infrastructure upgrades and advanced safety technologies.
The Kavach Version 4.0 system has now been commissioned on 2,633 route kilometres across the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors as of 31 July 2026. Trackside implementation has also begun on 21,794 route km, while 6,290 locomotives have been equipped with Kavach. The upgraded system has also successfully completed 160 kmph trials with a Vande Bharat train. Indian Railways has spent Rs. 3,875 crore on Kavach up to June 2026 and allocated Rs. 2,066 crore for FY27.
Indian Railways has also significantly improved track speeds through extensive infrastructure modernisation. The share of tracks supporting 110 kmph and above has increased from 39.6% in 2014 to over 80% in 2026, while tracks capable of 130 kmph and above have expanded from 5,036 km to 24,173 km. The New Delhi-Mumbai and New Delhi-Howrah routes are being upgraded for 160 kmph operations under Mission Raftaar.
Rail infrastructure expansion has also gathered pace, with 36,429 km of new railway tracks commissioned since 2014, nearly doubling the average construction rate to 8.32 km per day. As of April 2026, Indian Railways has 514 sanctioned projects covering 40,000 km, with a total investment of approximately Rs. 8.31 lakh crore.
To support future operations, Indian Railways trains nearly six lakh employees every year through its network of training institutes and Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya, focusing on freight operations, logistics, safety, digital technologies and modern railway systems.
