IWAI’s Kalughat Intermodal Terminal Receives Five-Star SVAGRIHA Rating

The Intermodal Terminal (IMT) at Kalughat, Bihar, developed by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) under the Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP), has earned a prestigious five-star SVAGRIHA rating from the GRIHA Council. This recognition highlights the terminal's environmentally sustainable design and construction practices.
The SVAGRIHA (Simple Versatile Affordable GRIHA) rating promotes green building and sustainability under the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment, a collaboration between the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and TERI. The award was presented to IWAI representatives, including Shri Arvind Kumar, Director of JMVP, and project partners from Sanjay Construction Company.
The IMT at Kalughat stood out for its use of recyclable materials, such as fibre, glass, paints, and sanitary fixtures, and its adherence to energy and waste management standards set by the GRIHA Council. The terminal's construction incorporated sustainable site planning, optimized energy use, water conservation measures, and solid waste management.
This project, part of the World Bank-funded JMVP, is a significant step in IWAI’s efforts to enhance infrastructure along National Waterway 1 (River Ganga) for improved cargo and passenger movement while ensuring environmental sustainability.
