Spain: A Place for Innovation & Industrial Development

Spain-industrial-development

I was recently invited to visit some of Spain’s major construction equipment manufacturers by ANMOPYC along with ICEX, to learn first-hand the country’s innovations, technologies and capabilities in infra development projects. ANMOPYC is one of Spain’s largest associations representing companies in the manufacturing sector for public works, construction, and mining machinery, while ICEX is a public business entity attached to Spain’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business, leading organization for internationalization and attracting foreign investment.

Most of us know Spain as a tourist destination, celebrated for its sunny days, beautiful beaches, and some of the world’s oldest historic cities. However, Spain has another, equally compelling side, one where innovation and industrial development are deeply embedded in its culture and society. During the six-day tour, we visited industrial clusters across four cities (Zaragoza, Seville, Madrid, and Barcelona), where innovation and technological advancement were truly in the air.

Many manufacturers and research organizations that are doing remarkable work in Spain are keen to collaborate with Indian companies. In fact, many of the companies we visited have been active in India for years. For instance, MoldTech, one of the world’s largest precast concrete equipment manufacturers, has executed several large projects in India. Teltronic, an end-to-end secure communications ecosystem provider, has supplied a complete solution for India’s first Rapid Rail System—the Delhi–Meerut RRTS. Putzmeister Spain supplies mining equipment globally, while Cintasa manufactures conveyors for large industries and mining applications, and Carod produces gensets and pumps for the industrial, agricultural, and construction sectors.

What impressed me most, however, was Spain’s remarkable progress in renewable energy. Spain is among the few countries genuinely committed to green energy. Over our 2,000-kilometre road journey across these four cities, windmills and solar farms appeared every few kilometres, continuously generating clean energy. One of the companies we visited was Hidrógeno Aragón, whose entire facility is powered by green energy. A key focus of their research is hydrogen and fuel cell technology. They have developed fuel cells to power cars, trucks, and buses. Their presentation of these innovations was outstanding, offering valuable insights into how hydrogen could transform our lives in the near future.

Another notable visit was to Olipes, a lubricant manufacturer known worldwide for its high-performance products. What sets Olipes apart is its complete in-house capability; the company develops its own formulations and carries out all mixing and chemical processes in its world-class laboratories.

Our next stop was UPLIFTING, a manufacturing facility that produces some of the world’s largest forklifts and reach stackers, serving ports, precast construction, and defence sectors. The company specializes in equipment designed for extreme environments, heavy usage, and long-duty cycles.

The visit has changed my perception of Spain –– from a country better known for its sun, sand, and rich heritage, to one that stands at the forefront of innovation and industrial excellence.
