Green Public Procurement in Steel and Cement

Green-Public
Integrating environmental criteria into procurement frameworks, industrial processes, and project execution for steel and cement is a critical lever for reducing sectoral carbon intensity. Embedding such metrics across these value chains enables optimized material selection, lifecycle efficiency, and alignment with India’s long-term decarbonization and infrastructure development objectives.
The Building Materials & Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC), under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, in collaboration with GreenTree Global, recently organized a Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on Green Public Procurement in Steel and Cement (GPPSC) at the India International Centre, New Delhi. The workshop addressed integrating sustainability criteria into India’s public procurement practices, focusing on two of the country’s most carbon-intensive sectors: steel and cement, which together contribute nearly 15–17% of the nation’s carbon emissions.
