Sagarmala Programme Fuels India’s Maritime Growth

Under the Sagarmala Programme, 839 projects worth ₹5.79 lakh crore have been identified for implementation. These projects are being executed by central ministries, IWAI, Indian Railways, NHAI, state governments, and major ports. As of March 19, 2025, 272 projects have been completed, with an investment of ₹1.41 lakh crore.
Sagarmala has modernized ports, boosted the coastal economy, and improved global logistics rankings. Coastal shipping has grown 118% in a decade, Ro-Pax ferries have transported 40 lakh passengers, and inland waterway cargo has surged 700%. Nine Indian ports now rank among the world's top 100, with Vizag in the top 20 container ports. Indian ports now outperform several advanced maritime nations on key benchmarks.
The government is now advancing the initiative with Sagarmala 2.0, focusing on shipbuilding, repair, recycling, and port modernization to enhance India's maritime competitiveness. Backed by ₹40,000 crore in budgetary support, the initiative aims to leverage ₹12 lakh crore in investments over the next decade, accelerating port-led development, coastal economic growth, and job creation. Aligning with Viksit Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat 2047, Sagarmala 2.0 is set to further strengthen India’s position as a global maritime leader.
