Over 3.61 Crore Saplings Planted Along 1.32 Lakh Km of National Highways in Five Years
Plantation is undertaken on available median and roadside land within the Right of Way (RoW), either as part of highway projects or through standalone initiatives. The government has also introduced Miyawaki plantations and drone-based monitoring to increase and track green cover along highways.
To make highway construction more sustainable, recycled and environment-friendly materials such as fly ash, reclaimed asphalt pavement, construction and demolition waste, plastic waste, slag, crumb rubber, natural geotextiles and treated sewage water are being promoted wherever technically feasible. Bamboo crash barriers and bio-bitumen are also being adopted in suitable projects.
Where tree felling is required for highway development, compensatory afforestation and tree transplantation are undertaken. The government said these measures, along with energy-efficient construction technologies and digital monitoring, are aimed at reducing emissions, conserving natural resources and minimising the environmental impact of National Highway development.
