Gujarat to Replace Asphalt Roads with Cement Concrete Roads Across Urban Areas
The decision was taken by the State Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. Government Spokesperson and Minister Jitu Vaghani said the move is aimed at providing durable, high-quality roads capable of withstanding heavy rainfall and waterlogging, conditions that frequently damage asphalt roads.
The government also plans to gradually convert asphalt roads in waterlogging-prone village settlements into CC roads. Construction of cement concrete roads in rural areas is already being undertaken under the Suvidhapath Yojana.
The use of CC roads will also be expanded in industrial areas experiencing heavy and extra-heavy vehicular traffic, wherever required.
According to the State Government, construction of cement concrete roads typically costs 30-40% more than asphalt roads. However, their longer service life and lower maintenance requirements are expected to reduce recurring expenditure on repairs and road upkeep over the long term.
CC roads are also better suited to continuous movement of heavy, overloaded and multi-axle vehicles and are more resistant to damage caused by heavy rainfall and prolonged waterlogging.
The move is expected to reduce recurring problems such as potholes and damaged road surfaces while improving the durability and quality of road infrastructure across Gujarat's urban areas.
