NHAI Intensifies Anti-Encroachment Drive on National Highways to Improve Road Safety
The action follows Supreme Court directions for the removal of unauthorised encroachments from public roads and highways. Encroachments can obstruct visibility, restrict carriageways, affect drainage and create unsafe entry and exit points, increasing the risk of accidents and disrupting highway operations.
As part of the initiative, NHAI's PIU Rajkot surveyed nearly 693 km of National Highways and issued 1,403 notices against unauthorised structures, illegal accesses and unapproved median cuts. More than 361 illegal accesses and encroachments have been removed, while 150 unauthorised median gaps have been permanently closed.
The drive is being undertaken in coordination with district administrations and police authorities. Recent operations have also cleared hundreds of unauthorised occupations along the Somnath-Dwarka Highway, including stretches in Bardiya and between Honest Hotel and Hathi Chowk.
According to NHAI, removing such encroachments will improve visibility and traffic flow, facilitate emergency response and restore the designated Right of Way (RoW), while safeguarding space required for future highway expansion.
