Decks cleared for Rs 2,080-cr NH project in TN
The construction of the Rajapalayam-Puliyarai stretch of the Thirumangalam-Kollam four-lane highway is set to proceed after receiving the necessary approvals from the concerned minister, who has written to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) urging expedited completion of the project. State agencies have already commenced the process of acquiring the required land. The tender process for the four-lane project, valued at Rs 2,080 crore, has been successfully completed, and construction work is scheduled to commence shortly.
The state has encountered challenges in widening the roads originally built during the British period. The road-building agency has faced opposition from environmentalists due to the need to cut trees, with concerns raised regarding the environmental impact. Additionally, farmers have expressed their resistance to the land acquisition process. However, despite these challenges, the government is committed to widening the highway stretch. Concurrently, land acquisition for bypass roads in Sankarankovil, Tenkasi, and Tirunelveli is currently underway, further supporting the infrastructure development efforts.
