NHAI to Take Over 110-km NH-766 Stretch by October for Four-Laning
As part of the process, NHAI will establish a site office at Kalpetta to oversee highway-related activities. Preparatory work for the office has already begun, and a new team, including a site engineer, is expected to be appointed shortly.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for widening the highway will subsequently be handled by the NHAI project director's office in Kozhikode. The DPR will assess the feasibility and design of converting the existing highway into a four-lane road and will cover the entire Vellimadukunnu-Muthanga corridor.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had earlier notified the stretch for inclusion under the National Highway development programme. It has also invited tenders several times for preparing the DPR for the proposed development.
The project is expected to include several measures to ease congestion and improve connectivity along the corridor. A key proposal is to develop the Chippilithode-Maruthilavu-Thalipuzha road as an alternative route to the Thamarassery Ghat Road. The proposed route is aimed at reducing traffic on the ghat road, particularly during periods of disruption.
Bypasses are also proposed at Koduvally, Thamarassery and Sultan Bathery as part of the planned NH-766 development.
