NHAI Opens 9-km Delhi-Mumbai Expressway Stretch Between DND and Jaitpur
The newly opened section allows motorists from east and south Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad to access the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway directly and travel towards Jaipur and Sawai Madhopur without interruption.
The Jaitpur-KMP (Kundli-Manesar-Palwal) interchange section is already operational. Nearly 8.5 km of the newly opened 9-km stretch is elevated. Of the 59-km Delhi link connecting DND Flyway with the expressway's junction with the KMP Expressway, around 50 km has now been opened in phases.
With the DND-Jaitpur section operational, Delhi now has direct connectivity to the country's longest access-controlled expressway.
Trial operations are conducted after construction is completed and safety audits are carried out. Motorists are not charged toll during the trial period, allowing NHAI to identify and rectify any deficiencies before formal commissioning.
The new stretch is expected to ease congestion on the Ring Road and Mathura Road by diverting traffic bound for Faridabad, Ballabhgarh and Sohna. The new route could reduce travel time between DND Flyway and Faridabad to around 20 minutes, compared with more than 30 minutes on the existing Ashram-Badarpur route.
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway was originally planned to run from Sohna to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) near Mumbai. In August 2018, NHAI proposed extending the alignment to DND Flyway to establish a direct connection with Delhi.
NHAI officials have indicated that the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is expected to become fully operational up to Vadodara by December, following a recent review meeting chaired by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari.
The Centre is also developing a direct connection between the expressway and Noida International Airport. The Union Cabinet approved a modified alignment in March, including an 11-km elevated link between Faridabad and the airport at a revised cost of Rs 3,631 crore.
