Govt. targets Rs.1 lakh-cr roads under PMGSY

In an attempt to build top-class road network in the rural heartland of the country, the Union government has targeted about Rs.100,000 crore to be spent on building new roads, including in areas affected by the Left-wing Extremism (LWE), and upgrading the existing ones as part of the Centre’s flagship Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). Out of the total targeted funds, Rs.90,000 crore will be spent on the core program (PMGSY 1 and 2) and will be spread over three years, starting with the current financial year. The Centre and states will share the amount in the ratio of 60:40. An additional Rs.11,000 crore will be spent by the Centre, also through the PMGSY, on constructing roads in LWE-hit districts. The funds would be invested on linking all the 65,000 habitations that are not connected in the first 15 years of the program, and also on upgrading the already built roads.
