Delhi gets ₹550-cr pedestrian-friendly green corridor

pedestrian-friendly green corridor
In an attempt to shift towards greener mobility, the Union home minister recently laid a foundation of a 33-km long green corridor called the 'Delhi Cycle Walk' at Tughlaqabad. The ₹550 crore corridor, which would traverse through Delhi's forests, is being developed by DDA, and is slated to be completed by 2024. The corridor will connect residential areas in South Delhi such as Tughlaqabad, Greater Kailash, Saket and Nehru Place and will pass through the city's green lungs, including the Jahanpanah forest. The main objectives of the project is making city walk-able and environment friendly; helping people save money by encouraging them to walk or cycle to their work places, shopping and study centres; reducing pollution as it involves connecting all the forests of the city and revival of the dried-up lakes. It will be a loop around the city like a ring and connect metro stations, bus stands, high density residential areas, business districts, industrial areas, recreational centres and green landscapes. The width of both the cycle track and the walkway will be 2.4 metres each with a green strip of a metre width separating the two. The cycle walk will be a controlled track with defined and secure entrance points near residential areas and exit points near places of workplaces, malls and schools. These points of entry shall be called Origin Destination plazas and have facilities for washrooms, cafés, cycle repairs and parking slots.
