Lift & Shift India Strives to Provide the Highest Quality of Services to Operate with the Latest Technology in a Cost-effective Manner

Sameer Parikh
Lift and Shift's Director, Mr. Sameer Parikh in a recent interview with Maria R gave his insight about the prospect of Indian logistics and specialized transport industry and informed how strongly his company has positioned itself to prosper in this competitive market by offering cost-effective innovative solutions.

Let's start with a background about Lift and Shift's inception and progression over the years.
Lift and Shift India Pvt. Ltd. (LSPL) is a firm started in 1947 with over 7 decades of service to the Indian and Foreign Engineering & Project Execution firms in India, Middle East as well as South East Asia. LSPL offers transportation, handling and lifting services to the engineering and capital goods industry for heavy equipment and project based cargo for its clients in the power, petrochemical refinery, fertilizer, and oil & gas industries.

Today, LSPL continues the tradition by offering specialized services to spur the growth of the Indian economy, fusing old business work ethics with cutting edge technology. LSPL has grown into a leading Indian company involved in the logistics and infrastructure support service industry. Our activities have surpassed India's borders and stretch all over the subcontinent and the Middle East. Recently, LSPL expanded its business by incorporating a new company in Oman, "Lift & Shift Engineering Middle East L.L.C." to pursue business opportunities in Oman and the GCC region. Still managed under a single family, the group continues to provide effective services using sound and sustainable business practices.

Lift and Shift is one of the most renowned names in providing logistic solutions and specialized transport services. Could you please brief us on the large fleet of your equipment & vehicles and application areas being catered by your company?
LSPL provides a unique & innovative engineered solutions to carry out safe Land transportation of Over Dimensional Consignments (ODC) equipment. With India's largest and most modern fleet of SPMT, Hydraulic Axles, Prime Movers, Hydraulic Gantries and cranes, LSPL provides inhouse solutions for any heavy lift requirement. We hold the record for the largest single equipment moved of 4500 tons. Our own Fleet of trailers helps in controlling the timely execution of the transport contracts awarded by some of India's largest Industrial Houses. This service along with our customs clearance offers to our clients a truly door delivery service option. For Marine Transport, we own barges and tugs for critical towages of project cargo from Middle East to Far East. LSPL is recognized by all the International Marine Warranty Surveyors viz Noble Denton, Matthew Daniel and London offshore. LSPL conducts load outs and specialized marine installations projects.

"At Lift & Shift India Pvt, Ltd., we'll keep providing the highest quality of services to operate with the latest technology and to provide our clients with cost- effective solutions."

In the wake of Government's thrust on development of infrastructure projects (metro, refineries, wind power etc), how do you see the prospect of Indian logistics and specialized transport industry in general and Lift and Shift's business in particular?
The logistics sector in India is growing remarkably. We see new projects getting declared by the government and there are lot of potential for logistics companies in providing their services. There is delay in implementation of projects due to issues like lack of up-to-date technology, huge paper-work, absence of better road, sea and rail connectivity, etc. Expansion of existing Public Sector Units and other Greenfield projects are yet to be seen. Finances are yet to be cleared up hence these upcoming projects are stagnant. The future of the logistics sector depends not only on the continued development of infrastructure & technology but also on the attitude and determination of the service providers in adapting themselves and making optimal utilization of available resources.

With the entrance of several global market leaders of heavy-duty modular trailers and transporters in India; what impact you see in the domestic logistic market in terms of quality, productivity, safety, and total cost of ownership?
Change is inevitable. Client demands are growing every year and tough competition is seen today worldwide. It is our commitment to add value by building long-term relations based on mutual trust and operational excellence. We believe in providing cost-effective solutions, delivering faster and better, which has brought us success in an extremely competitive environment. LSPL's strong National and International presence has enabled us to perfectly execute all challenging operations so far.

Are the customers of a price-sensitive Indian market ready to pay for the technologically advanced equipment you have in your fleet?
LSPL has earned a name for handling multi-faceted jobs including those places wherein sea and rail transport is required, where we had to make by-passes, build Ro – Ro bridges/ links, create jetties for Roll-off, conduct route surveys and arrange for movements. To prosper in this business, we have to provide cost-effective solutions better than others. Hence, we bring in innovative solutions, negotiating with our vendors for their price so that our clients get the best of our services at a much reasonable costs.

What is the core strength of your company which makes it to float in the current lackluster economic condition?
Our strength lies in our experienced and efficient work force backed by precise engineering, state-of-the-art equipment and a strong commitment to the job at hand with safety being our prime concern. As part of our QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment) initiative LSPL is committed to a ZERO HARM policy at all sites where it operates. All our employees and subcontractors are assured a safe working environment. A safety officer is appointed at our every site to ensure all safety procedures are followed.

Why do you think-customers would go for Lift and Shift's services when they have other options in the market? What strength/advantages do you offer through your products and services?
Customers turn to us for projects which have never been executed before in India. From the heaviest equipment transported (4500 metric tons), Installation of Ro Ro link / bridges, transporting of 125 m long column, of 1200 ton ship section with fine aligning it to a tolerance of 2 mm and even separating a heavy module into two pieces. From the smallest and most delicate cargo to the largest and heaviest equipment, we provide all requirements from ship handling, custom clearance, road or sea transportation and erection. LSPL thus prides in being first movers and innovating solutions and succeeds in creating a habit of delivering the Impossible to Possible safe and on schedule every time. Further, we pride ourselves in achieving the MALA Award for the 6th consecutive year as "Heavy Lift Operator of the Year".

Could you please tell us about one of the most challenging and critical projects undertaken by Lift and Shift?
LSPL specializes in providing engineering solutions for transport of heavy equipment whose size, weight and shape, not become a limiting factor for the transport of these equipment and hence gives an edge to Indian manufacturers in International market.

  1. Samsung Engineering Opal Dahej Project: This project involved receiving 24 critical refinery equipment with weights ranging from 150 tons to 1500 tons and length up to 125 mtrs. The cargo was received at Mumbai port under the ship's hook on LSPL barges and shipped to Dahej where LSPL had constructed a jetty and a temporary approach road of 1.2 kms to the refinery site.
  2. Adgas Module Transport: LSPL was contracted to do the land transport, load out and onward sea voyage of 8 Pre-assembled units from Hazira to Abu Dhabi port in the Middle East. The unique challenge for this shipment was the nature of the load spreader beams that required for SPMT axles inserted transversely and driven with a 90-degree steering. LSPL deployed 64 SPMT axle lines along with a 330 class barge for this shipment. The onward sea transportation to the Middle East was done under strict warranty requirements that included weather monitoring and in depth route planning.

Thereafter, roll-on of these equipment and transporting them to EBTL jetty in Hazira by use of a 300 class Barge with cargo in each voyage weighing 4500 tons and delivery to heavy lift vessel for further voyage to Kuwait.
  6. Zwatika offshore Decks Loadout: The scope of work included the land transportation from L&T MFY Sohar Yard (Oman) to the jetty and load out onto a dumb barge.
