President, CJ Darcl Logistics Ltd.
“Our focus on providing comprehensive solutions, powered by cutting-edge technology, warehousing facilities and pan India presence, ensures that our clients experience seamless, efficient, and environmentally responsible logistics services.” Nikhil Agarwal, President, CJ Darcl Logistics Ltd.

The logistics industry in India has emerged as a key contributor to the country’s journey towards economic prosperity. It is aligned with the vision of making India the third-largest economy globally. As the industry is on the brink of major evolution with massive infrastructural enhancements, technology adoption, and sustainability initiatives, we believe 2025 will be a revolutionary year for the sector.

India’s freight movement is heavily inclined toward road transportation, which moves 66% of cargo (in ton-km) followed by rail (31%), shipping (3%) and air (1%). To aid this cargo movement, India expanded its road network which increased connectivity and decreased transportation time for goods. Railways underwent a similar transformation, with the government’s focus towards creating dedicated freight corridors to provide high-speed, dedicated freight tracks that eliminate delays and increase efficiency. Government-led digital programs such as ULIP, ICEGATE, and e-logs have streamlined operations, reduced paperwork, and enhanced transparency to make the logistics and transportation operations more efficient.

Environmental sustainability has also been a major focus. As India is on the track to meet Net Zero emissions by 2070, the logistics industry has taken up the challenge. Electric vehicles, renewable energy at the ports, and eco-friendly maritime practices are no longer part of a future wish list — they’re in place. Research and innovation have been hastened by the launch of the National Centre of Excellence for Green Port & Shipping, moving the sector nearer to carbon neutrality. The year 2025 is poised to be a turning point, with logistics at the heart of India’s economy. The few transformations that we foresee the industry would undergo in 2025 include:

Infrastructure Growth

The next few years are going to be huge for India’s infrastructure, and logistics would be the center of it. With a massive $1.4 trillion investment announced, the country is rigorously working towards upgrading its ports, building dedicated freight corridors, and creating multimodal logistics parks. This means faster and more efficient movement of goods across the country.

With the previously announced infrastructural investments and work already underway, the opening up of new multimodal parks and inland ports for use will help in decongestion of major ports and enhance connectivity to tier 2 and tier 3 cities. This will also contribute towards the development of efficient and world-class warehousing. The government’s push towards setting up of e-commerce export hubs will also increase global competitiveness and boost exports.

Digital Leap

With the widespread adoption of technology in logistics operations in the coming year, we foresee more transparency in the operations with features like real time tracking that would help improve the supply chain management and enhance customer satisfaction.

The use of AI & ML models which have been under training for majority of the segments are anticipated to be in action with more accurate forecasting thus, enhancing the reliance on them for various supply chain related activities.

Sustainability

The logistics sector is taking bold steps toward green practices, with increased focus on adoption of electric and alternate fuels for road operations. The industries are now sensitized and more open to adopt multimodal transportation options and we expect this trend to increase in 2025 with more supply chain organizations adding this as a standard offering along with a proper tracking mechanism for carbon emissions saved in the entire process.

Moreover, a lot of progress has already been made in eco-friendly packaging and it is expected to further dwell down in the supply chain, making the entire process more sustainable.

Last-Mile Innovations

As e-commerce grows, last-mile delivery is going to be a big focus in the year 2025 and beyond. With new initiatives and regulatory support from the government, we can anticipate an expansion in the network of EVs and its charging infrastructure leading to increased adoption of e-vehicles even in tier 2 & 3 cities. We remain dedicated to driving growth, building long-term partnerships, and contributing to India's ambition of becoming a global logistics leader. With proper infrastructure, adoption of tech-advanced solutions, effective partnerships and collaborations, the Indian logistics sector is set for an upward trajectory characterized by resilience, sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
