On Earth Day 2026, Indian Railways highlighted its expanding environmental initiatives, with over 81.59 lakh trees planted across its network during 2025–26. The large-scale plantation drive reflects the organisation’s continued focus on integrating sustainability into its operations while reducing its carbon footprint.

The initiative has been implemented across all railway zones, with major contributions from Northeast Frontier Railway, South Central Railway, Northeast Railway and Northern Railway. Plantation along railway tracks, station premises and available land is helping enhance green cover, support biodiversity and improve environmental conditions across regions.

Beyond environmental benefits, the plantation drive is also contributing to infrastructure safety and resilience. Vegetation helps reduce soil erosion, manage surface runoff and minimise risks of track destabilisation, particularly in vulnerable terrains. The initiative also aids in noise and dust reduction, while improving microclimatic conditions for passengers, reinforcing Indian Railways’ broader push towards sustainable and safe transportation.
