Manipur clears construction of multi-storied buildings

The Manipur government has given the go-ahead for the construction of seven storied structures within the municipal limits of Imphal Municipal Corporation, said state minister for Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD), Th. Shyamkumar. As per the existing building bye-laws, such activities are not allowed as the state falls under seismic zone-V, the most earthquake-prone zone. This limitation has led to horizontal expansion rather than vertical, and the amendment has been made to facilitate construction of such structures. However, the minister cautioned that the people who wish to construct seven storey buildings must adhere to the strict safety criteria. He further informed that the amendment has been made after discussions with experts and the provision has been included in the Manipur gazette published recently.
