Puducherry to Get Rs 119.94 Crore Smart Fishing Harbour Under PMMSY
The programme at Kamarajar Manimadapam aims to strengthen fisheries infrastructure, promote sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities, improve value-chain efficiency and accelerate the development of the Blue Economy through a cooperative-led approach.
The event will be attended by Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Panchayati Raj Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Minister of State S. P. Singh Baghel, Puducherry Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and other senior Union Territory and Central government officials.
Puducherry has emerged as a focus area for infrastructure-led fisheries development under PMMSY, with investments in modern facilities including the upgraded Thengaithittu Fishing Harbour and a fish landing centre at Nallavadu. These facilities have improved fish handling, berthing, auctioning and safety arrangements for fishing communities.
The government has also adopted a cluster-based approach to strengthen the fisheries value chain, with Karaikal notified as a Fishing Harbour Cluster under PMMSY. A Smart and Integrated Fishing Harbour is being developed in Karaikal with a total outlay of Rs 119.94 crore.
The modern harbour is expected to provide safer vessel berthing, hygienic fish handling and more efficient marketing facilities while improving operational efficiency and strengthening the fisheries value chain.
Puducherry is also promoting cooperative-led seaweed farming through the Advanced Centre for Innovation and Capacity Development (ACICD) in Karaikal. The initiative uses modern technologies to promote sustainable livelihoods, with a particular focus on fisherwomen.
The programme will support Fish Farmer Producer Organisations (FFPOs) and fisheries cooperatives by strengthening institutional capacity and improving access to infrastructure, finance, technology, value addition and markets.
The government expects the integrated approach to help unlock Puducherry's fisheries potential, increase incomes, generate employment and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for coastal communities while supporting the development of the Blue Economy.
