Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said that strategic infrastructure such as roads, tunnels, airfields and ports will remain indispensable for national security, even as the armed forces induct advanced weapons and modern combat platforms to address evolving warfare challenges.

Addressing the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Strategic Infrastructure Conclave in New Delhi, Singh emphasised that while military capability determines the outcome of conflicts, robust infrastructure is essential for enabling military operations and ensuring rapid deployment of forces.

He said roads leading to border areas are as critical to national security as the soldiers guarding the frontiers, and praised BRO for adopting advanced construction technologies to build resilient infrastructure in some of the world's most challenging terrains.

Highlighting BRO's achievements over the past six decades, Singh said landmark projects such as the Atal Tunnel, Sela Tunnel and Umling La Pass demonstrate the organisation's engineering capabilities and commitment to strengthening India's border infrastructure.

The Defence Minister described tunnelling technology as a major breakthrough that has transformed infrastructure development in mountainous regions and commended BRO for accelerating road and highway construction through the adoption of modern engineering practices.

Reaffirming the government's focus on connectivity, Singh said the Centre is expanding road, rail, air and digital infrastructure across the country while developing border villages under the Vibrant Villages Programme to improve connectivity and economic opportunities in frontier regions.

He called for greater collaboration between government, industry, academia and engineers to create an ecosystem that promotes innovation and execution excellence in infrastructure development.

Director General Border Roads Lt Gen Harpal Singh said BRO is undergoing organisational transformation through digital planning, artificial intelligence-enabled solutions, mechanisation and modern construction methodologies to improve project planning, execution and maintenance.

During the event, Rajnath Singh presented awards to BRO projects for excellence in infrastructure development and launched two digital platforms for project management and recruitment as part of the organisation's digital transformation initiative.

He also released three BRO publications—Path Pradarshak, Oonchi Sadken and Path Vikas—highlighting the organisation's engineering innovations, achievements and future roadmap, and unveiled the BRO Anthem.

The two-day conclave brought together senior military officials, policymakers, infrastructure experts, industry representatives and technology partners to discuss emerging technologies, digital transformation, sustainable construction practices and execution strategies for strategic infrastructure development in India's border regions.
