Indian Railways Nears 100% Electrification; Significant Progress Achieved

Indian Railways (IR) has electrified 98% of its Broad Gauge (BG) network, with the remaining sections under active implementation. The accelerated railway electrification drive has significantly reduced diesel dependency, cutting fuel consumption for traction by 136 crore liters in 2023-24 compared to 2018-19, thereby lowering carbon emissions.
The Mission 100% Electrification is a complex initiative, as it involves electrifying operational railway lines while tackling forest clearances, utility relocations, geological and topographical challenges, and law & order issues. To fast-track execution, Indian Railways has implemented a Project Monitoring Group (PMG) portal, an improved monitoring system, assured funding, and increased financial powers for field units.
Despite these challenges, electrification is enhancing haulage capacity, train speeds, and travel efficiency, marking a major step towards a greener and more efficient railway network.
