Govt Strengthens Flood Management & Infra Development in Northeast India

Flood management and anti-erosion projects are primarily handled by State Governments, with the Union Government providing technical and financial assistance for critical areas. Since the 11th Five-Year Plan, ₹2,382 crore has been allocated to North Eastern States under the Flood Management & Border Areas Programme (FMBAP) of the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
For FY 2024-25, a budget of ₹400 crore has been earmarked under FMBAP, with ₹121.50 crore allocated to North Eastern Region (NER) flood projects. So far, 208 flood management projects have been completed in the region.
Between 2017-18 and 2023-24, 13 projects worth ₹62.85 crore were sanctioned under NEC schemes for flood and erosion control. Additionally, a ₹207 crore project for the protection of Majuli Island from the Brahmaputra’s flood and erosion was approved in 2017 under the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources-Central. These initiatives aim to mitigate flood risks and strengthen resilience in vulnerable areas.
