Upskilling Civil Engineers for Resilient Infrastructure in India

Sarathy Geotech and Engineering Services Pvt. Ltd.
As India’s infrastructure expands to meet the demands of a growing population and economy, the gaps in construction expertise and professional integrity become more apparent. This is where the role of education, training, and skill development becomes essential.

Dr. CR Parthasarathy - Founder, and Managing Director, Sarathy Geotech and Engineering Services Pvt. Ltd.

India is a nation abundant in human resources, particularly in the field of civil engineering. However, despite the vast pool of talent, the construction sector faces significant challenges. Structural failures, such as bridge collapses and defective piles, are alarmingly frequent. These failures not only endanger public safety but also highlight critical gaps in the industry—gaps that must be addressed to ensure sustainable development and a future of resilient infrastructure. The root causes of these issues can often be traced to a combination of factors, including negligence, insufficient knowledge, and a lack of adequate skill development.

The Importance of Integrity and Skill Development

Having spent years in the geotechnical engineering industry, I have witnessed firsthand the impact of poor construction practices. In an industry that handles such crucial aspects of infrastructure development, there is no room for error or compromise. The core issues lie not just in technical knowledge, but also in the mindset with which professionals approach their work. The need for integrity and a commitment to high standards is paramount.

To address these gaps, it is essential to train civil engineers—both professionals and students—not only in the latest technologies and methods but also in the importance of ethical conduct, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of the long-term implications of their work. It is my strong belief that the challenges we face in the construction sector can be overcome by fostering a new generation of engineers who are not only technically proficient but are also value-driven.

As India’s infrastructure expands

Upskilling for a Future-Ready Workforce

Recognizing the need to upskill the workforce, we at Sarathy Geotech and Engineering Services established TAQELL Edification Pvt. Ltd., an initiative focused on delivering high-quality training to civil engineers across the country. TAQELL Edification's mission is to bridge the existing skill gaps by offering practical, hands-on learning opportunities in addition to theoretical knowledge. Our programs are designed to cover a range of critical areas, from geotechnical investigation techniques to soft skills like leadership, communication, and practical examples.

The alarming rate of structural failures in India underscores the urgent need for skilled professionals who are equipped to handle the complexities of modern infrastructure projects. TAQELL Edification aims to be a platform where engineers are not only trained to excel in their technical domains but also to understand the broader context of their work. We believe that by developing a strong foundation of knowledge, ethics, and skills, civil engineers can play a pivotal role in preventing construction failures and ensuring the safety of our infrastructure.

Role of Government and Industry in Supporting Upskilling Efforts

While TAQELL Edification has taken the initiative to address the skill gap, the support of both government and private industry is crucial in amplifying the impact of these efforts. Government policies and programs focused on skill development are key to nurturing talent at a national level. Furthermore, collaborations between educational institutions, industry bodies, and government agencies can create a more robust ecosystem for civil engineering education.

The recent push by the government to support skill development programs across sectors is a step in the right direction. However, there is still much work to be done to ensure that these programs reach the right audience and deliver meaningful outcomes. TAQELL Edification is committed to partnering with both public and private stakeholders to ensure that our training programs align with national development goals and industry requirements.

As India’s infrastructure expands

Building a Strong Future

As India continues to grow, the need for a skilled and knowledgeable workforce in civil engineering is more crucial than ever. By focusing on the holistic development of engineers, we can ensure that our infrastructure is safe, durable, and sustainable. At TAQELL Edification, we are driven by the vision of building not just physical structures, but a future-ready workforce that can lead India into a new era of construction excellence.

We are confident that with the right training, mentorship, and industry collaboration, India’s civil engineers will become unstoppable forces of positive change, capable of transforming the nation’s infrastructure landscape. Our goal is to equip them with the skills and mindset needed to tackle the challenges of tomorrow, ensuring that our cities, bridges, and buildings stand the test of time.

Upskilling civil engineers is not just a professional necessity, it is a national priority. By investing in education, training, and the development of human resources, we can create a future where infrastructure failures are minimized, and construction excellence becomes the norm. With the support of the government and industry partners, Taqell is poised to play a key role in shaping this future, one engineer at a time.
