Abhijeet Pai
Puzzolana Machinery Fabricators is countering the ongoing demand volatility in crushing and screening plants through well backed, calibrated diversification initiative. Placement of various crushing and screening solutions for numerous applications in aggregates, ore crushing to mineral extraction and further customized solutions in crushing and screening is characterizing the diversification drive of the Hyderabad based company. NBM&CW had an opportunity to interact with Mr. Abhijeet Pai, Director, Puzzolana to learn about the company's broader game plan to move business through the initiative of expanding product portfolio.

What have been your new products launch and their competitiveness?
Our major and recent new launch for the industry has been our indigenously manufactured surface miners. We started producing surface miners nine months ago. Our surface miners have been put on test at Talcher and Mahanadi Coal Fields. The areas are known to have one of the hardest rock formation and our machines have shown encouraging results working on them. The surface miners are competitively advanced as compared to other products offering as they have improved fuel consumption. The drums fitted in the machines have an extended tooth life other products with a more then 10% saving on the operating cost. The equipment also score on its advanced cutting technology and 4 meters drum size as compared to 2.3 meters drum made available by other manufacturers. GPS fitted on the miners ensures its optimum performance. We will provide total support for operation and maintenance of the equipment, precisely for replacement of the tooth and repair of the drums.

Our other new launch has been tracked mounted 200 tph crusher manufactured in joint venture with MFL Austria of diesel electric design for applications like mining, quarrying, aggregate recycling and waste management. The track mounted crusher comes with loading hopper of 2.5 cubic vibro grid with tapered sides for greater efficiency. Further, we have also introduced 200-300 tph crawler jaw crushers in technical collaboration with MFL of Austria. The crushers are of rugged design with single toddle jaw crusher of feed opening 1000 X 650 mm with vibrating grizzly to take feed sizes upto 550 mm. Taking the initiative further, we also plan to promote our newly introduced feeder breakers for coal and lignite primary crushing. Based on more than satisfactory results of our feeder breakers, we have bagged repeat orders from our clients.

Dry classifiers have been our added introduction to create quality sand as per international standerds.

However, interestingly going ahead beyond the boundary of our core business areas, we have also started manufacturing cutter suction dredger. The new product has been designed based on the large scale market potential of the equipment in India which otherwise is dominated largely by foreign manufacturers and solution providers.

What are the modifications being carried in your existing products?
Energy saving and enviroment friendly modifications are the key area of focus at the present product range. In addition automation and safety features have been included to best support the growing requierments of the mineral processing industry.

How have you backed your product diversification?
Puzzolana enjoys a distinction of being a core vertical engineering entity. Bulk of our existing products are designed and manufactured in house both for standard and customized applications backed by our state-of-the-art manufacturing infrastructure. It is our wide engineering expertise that has been put to use for products expansion both for our existing businesses and newer areas.

Our in-house engineering expertise backed by our own R&D support has been instrumental in making our products much oriented to applications. Notwithstanding, making them competitively priced. One of our recent initiatives towards product development through our own knowledge is our plan to design axles for our wheel loaders. Producing conveyors of 9 km per month is another initiative. Further, newer modifications in fabrication on our wheel mounted have also been assisted by our own engineering knowledge. Our cost competitive engineering has allowed us to bag turnkey orders for niche crushing and screening applications from Europe.

With large scale diversification within and beyond business areas; how the company is ensuring support to its existing products range?
We have wide spread network in India with fully developed associates dealers and stockiest. Prompt and efficient after sales and services is our major distinction over our competitors. We work as solution partners with our customers for our existing products and newer products through parts support, parts and maintenance support, operation support and life cycle support for the equipment. We intend to strengthen this further by setting up more number of parts depots by 2014 across the country. There lies business opportunity in parts support business. We will look to offer product support by setting up regional headquarters in different parts of the country. There are plans to set up a regional headquarter at Gurgaon for serving the North Indian market.

Quantify the market response to your engineering knowledge & product diversification?
Puzzolana has a population of 2000 plants working across the country with regular orders for 15+ plants every month. We have a large clientele going for repeat orders with us. Our advanced standard application and customized plants have been able to make their presence in advanced markets of Europe. Recently, we have bagged an order for a modular plant from Lafarge cement for their facility in North Africa. We have also supplied five plants to Afghanistan. Our products have presence at least in twenty-two countries.
