Puzzolana: Our Aim is to be the Best

Prakash Pai
"PUZZOLANA, today, is the number one player in India in the field of crushing & screening in terms of providing Cost-effective Techno Commercial solution," claims Mr. Prakash Pai, CMD, Puzzolana in an interview with S.A.Faridi. "Puzzolana is the first company to produce plants of 100tph and above capacity in India. Our aim is to be a 'Solution Partner' to our customer in all their crushing needs and to achieve the lowest cost/ton of production. Currently, we're focusing on energy saving and hence introducing improved versions of Jaw, Cone crushers and Dry/wet type classifiers. That Apart, we've recently launched the improved version of Diesel electric crawler units," he adds.

Being one of the oldest and largest crushing & screening equipment manufacturers; what is your overview on the technological trend of crushing, screening, and surface mining equipment in India?
The trend is for higher capacity of plants, so that the mechanization is feasible and also productivity will improve and reduction in cost/ton. Also the approach towards green belt, the river sand usage is being controlled and resulting in production of quality and consistency and for both concreting and plastering to conserve water and at the same time to produce quality sand by using dry classification. The demand for surface miners, especially in the case of soft minerals like coal and limestone open cast mining, is being implemented, as this is an overall cost economic process.

Puzzolana is one of the very few home grown infrastructure equipment companies, which instead of choosing tie-ups with multinationals, has developed its most products in-house. What has the inspiration been behind this strategy?
Puzzolana is the first company to produce plants of 100tph and above capacity in India. We always believe that we have the knowledge and our focus is mainly India-centric. We have thoroughly studied the Indian minerals and produce the proto type and tested the products even before launch.

Our aim is to be a "Solution partner" to our customers in all their crushing needs and to achieve the lowest cost/ton of production. This approach of us resulted in to the biggest customer base (nearing 2000 plants) in India.

Our customers walk in with their varied requirements like concrete & plaster sands and improve the quality of sand, etc., which become our R&D projects. They lead to develop our product portfolio.

In its quest to be a total solution provider, Puzzolana has recently added Tracked Crushing & Screening plant to its product line. Will you please shed light on its technical attributes and the applications it will cater to?
We have the crawler units in our range. The demand for crawler units, is picking up as:
  • The smaller quarries and expensive land prices
  • Fast track projects & need for in pit crushing etc.,
The unique features of Crawler units:
  • Diesel electric Drive systems – optimizing the operating cost
  • Higher capacity crushers with suitable feed hoppers and type-tested machines in semi-mobile and skid designs
  • Capable of producing GSB (-) 65mm product in single stage
  • Capable of producing WMM product in two stages
  • Three deck vibrating screens to produce all required products
How do you see the growth projection of your Sander with the ban on river sand mining and their rampant extraction in India?
Slowly the awareness/ acceptance/ advantages of manufactured Sand is increasing and I am sure this itself will be a check on usage of river sand. Today, the task is how to reduce the production of wastage (-) 150 microns in the manufactured sands.

Our Sander a slow speed and compression crushing is the solution for quality sand. We have introduced the plaster sander which in association with dry classification can produce plaster sand as per iS 1542.

Also the demand for finer aggregates (-) 12mm is increasing for black topping and repair works in state highway projects.

These are all about the growth for sand plants and addition of a stage for crushing.

Mr. Prakash Pai meets Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi
In response to the Make in India call, Mr. Prakash Pai meets Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi to apprise him Puzzolana’s initiatives and highly advanced locally manufactured range of products. PM praises Mr. Pai’s efforts and contribution in taking this drive forward.

Surface mining is another area where Puzzolana is quite actively fine tuning its productline; will you please brief us about your surface miner?
Our research on product improvement is continuous and we have the 4200mm size drums on our surface miners. Our surface miners have successfully clocked and we are looking this as a business vertical.

Puzzolana is planning to launch Asphalt Batching plant in India. What is the status of this? Could you please highlight the technical attributes and the salient features of this new launch which would give an edge over others?
We have designed and developed state-of-the-art batching plants of 120|200Cum/hr, and are on testing and will be launched by the end of this year. Our aim is to achieve a quality mix at optimal cost.

SURFACE MINER

How do you look to make your products cost-competitive in the high price sensitive Indian market?
  • Our products are heavy duty, suitable/universal for all types of minerals.
  • They are designed to produce varying products both in sizes and quality.
  • We are flexible in tailor making the plant to the needs of customer.
  • Our Plants consume lowest operating costs, in terms of consumption of energy, parts and spares.
  • As we have plants in all crushing zones of India with well-developed service team and parts stocking points.
  • We have solutions for all crushing & screening needs and have practical knowledge of the mining/minerals in India.
  • On site refurbishment of machinery and if needed support with float equipment in case of major overhauls/repairs.
Puzzolana Sander
How do you see your export business? What are the newer initiatives to increase sales and strengthen product support? How is Indian market different from global ones?
Export business is picking up in Middle East and Africa. We have our dealer network in place with parts stocking and service support.

Puzzolana has the advantage of its Indian customers like L&T, Simplex, NCC, BSCPL, C&C, who have started taking projects outside India and are using our plants.

Is Puzzolana looking for any further expansion in terms of collaboration and distribution network?
Our distribution network is expanding according to the plant population and need.

We are setting up workshops for repairs/refurbishment of plants to cater to North/East and north eastern states.

Our own stock points in North & eastern regions.
