PMP Industries - The Application Specialist will Display its Complete Solutions at Excon

What is the status of your Chakan plant which was supposed to start production this year? What are the products to be rolled out from this facility?

As planned, the new premise of PMP Drive Systems India started the production of PMB gearbox series 6 months ago. PMB drives are the mixer truck gearboxes that made PMP Industries the global leader in the Concrete Industry sector. PMP strength consist in being able to provide the Concrete Industry with a package solution complete of transmission, hydraulics, water pump and other devices. Along with the most reliable and robust gearbox in market, PMP manufactures, tests 100% and supplies hydraulic motors and pumps. Such a complete offer has obvious advantages for the user in terms of better performances (3-4% more efficient) that means real savings (from 50,000 to 1,00,000 INR yearly, depending on the working conditions), higher compared to all the other solutions available on the market. PMB gearboxes cover the widest range of applications on Mixer Trucks and Trailers: up to 20 cubic meters drum capacity.

Manufacturing in India gives advantages in terms of shorter delivery time for the local market and in terms cost competitiveness, while maintaining at the same time high quality level. In this plant PMP manufacturers water pumps for Mixer Trucks as well.

The next step in the development plan of the Indian plant is the production of gearboxes for wheeled (PMR series) and crawler (PMC series) applications. PMP Industries' experience in planetary gearboxes and its technological excellence in wet multiple disk brakes were combined to create an innovative series of products for tracked and crawler applications. PMC and PMR drives offer outstanding features in terms of load capacity, toughness, smoothness of operation and cost effectiveness. Special solutions in the brake design provide durability also in demanding applications and the use of the latest technologies in gear design and manufacturing extends the gearbox life for rated loads and torques. 

Last two years have been quite tough for Equipment sector. Has this affected PMP expansion plan for India and what initiatives you have taken to keep your top and bottom line healthy?

Besides the difficulties of the market, PMP harvested in India promising results on the top (sales) line. This is the result of the work done in the previous years in terms of building reputation as an trustworthy and reliable high-tech partner, able to tailor complete solution on customer needs. Moreover, in this period PMP Industries has started in India some very important projects with International players which in the future will grant a good growth not only for PMP India but also for the group globally. One of the distinctive and winning factor for PMP in the last years in India is the Hydraulics: PMP is the first manufacturer that introduced the high pressure (450 bar) complete solutions for construction machinery. Benefits in the terms of performances are evident and many customers took advantage in terms of better efficiencies and costs reduction.

On the bottom line, we worked to maintain the Indian organization quite lean, in order to be able to react immediately to positive and negative market fluctuations. In this way PMP was able to lower the general costs.

Indian working conditions are quite different from the European countries; are you doing any India specific R&D? Please elaborate.

Indian conditions and technologies are very different compared to the European ones. It is almost impossible to be successful in the Indian market simply using the same products sold in the rest of the world. Indian market, more than others, requires tailored solutions designed having the specific needs of the local customers in mind. For this reason it is very important to have a direct contact with customers and in some cases assist them in choosing the right solutions that fully fits their needs. This is especially true when hydraulic solutions are involved. And this is what we do: PMP is a fully customer oriented company: we are not only a company that sells products, but also listens to the local customers, designs, manufactures, tests and provides complete solutions for applications belonging to different sectors. PMP Industries gives support and service from the initial design of the machine to the after sales support. As the technical department of PMP Industries continues to design customized solutions for each specific applications, PMP Industries is increasingly becoming known as the "Application Specialist". The development of dedicated solutions for different customers has increased customer confidence regarding PMP strategy: the integration of expertise in planetary gearbox transmissions with heavy-duty hydraulic axial piston motors and pumps. The results of this strategy are complete solutions delivered for heavy-duty applications such as hydraulic excavators, mining, road construction, agricultural and forestry machines.

For the current competitive environment, customers' proximity is the need of the day. How is PMP Industries positioning itself to address after market and sales services?

Being close to the final customer it's a key point to be successful nowadays. Worldwide presence is a fundamental growing step without which it would be not possible to build a proficient relationship with major international players. In the last 15 years PMP Industries invested a lot in widening and improving its presence around the world, not only with production plants, but also with sales, after sales and service offices. Today PMP can count on 5 production units in 4 countries (Italy, Bosnia, China and India), 2 subsidiaries (USA e Brazil) and several after sales center all around the world. 2014 was a busy year for PMP Industries: we completed the expansion of the Headquarters in Italy, we started the production in the new plant in India, we opened the new after sales and service center in USA, we expanded the Bosnian and Chinese plants in order to increase the production capacity. Even amid the difficulties of the moment, PMP is always able to look ahead.

What are your plans for Excon 2015? What innovation one should expect at your stand this year?

At the end of November, PMP Industries will present at Excon 2015 the newest versions of its tailored complete solutions. At PMP booth, mixer truck manufacturers will have the opportunity to closely appreciate the PMB series, world known mixer truck gearboxes, completed with PMP PMH hydraulic motors and pumps and discover the newest version of its compact patented solution, the PMBec.

Excavator manufacturers will find absolutely interesting the features of PMCI integrated travel drives series coupled with PMTE swing drives series, designed specifically for working pressures up to 450 bar and for hydraulic excavators up 50 ton. Excon will be the occasion to see also PMP latest proposal for the Road Building Industry, in particular the solutions for Tandem Rollers as the PMCI integrated travel drives, the PMH MCF hydraulic motors and the PMH P Tandem Pumps that feature several type of controls and additional features designed specifically for this kind of application. Material Handling Equipment manufactures will see the PMS621, the new revolutionary and patented model of PMP drive systems for electric industrial vehicles series. PMS621 matches the long term experience of PMP Industries in solid and reliable gearbox design and manufacturing with PMP new generation high performances electric motors. While most of the competitors' products work at 5.000 rpm, PMP PMS621 drive system set the standard at 10.000 rpm. Thanks to the high speed motor with less copper content the motor size is reduced and this, together with the integration between motor and gearbox, makes the PMS621 a very compact solution. Efficiency is also increased thanks to a reduced drag torque on the brake and minimal power loss in cables. EMI (Electromagnetic interference losses) are also improved thanks to the shorter phase cables. The reduced number of the components, the lower wiring cost and the reduced copper content in the motor make PMS621 very competitive compared to similar solutions.
