Mahaveera Transport Dealing with Challenges

R.K. Jain, Director, Mahaveera Transport Pvt. Ltd. shares with P.P. Basistha, the company’s strategies to sustain profitability in a highly competitive environment.

Logistics service provider, Mahaveera Transport, had a modest beginning in 1982, when it entered transportation of hot rolled, cold rolled coils and sheets with its two trucks. Presently, it owns a colossal fleet 580 vehicles that include flatbed trailers, multi axle, single container trucks, and light commercial vehicles. The company has become a major transporter of ODC, automobiles, white goods, Tyres, FMCG products, and warehousing services, and is serving the north, west, and south Indian markets. In ODC segment, Alstom, Volvo, L&T Komatsu etc are its main clients, whereas in automobiles, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota, Tata, TAFE, Honda etc are the major revenue contributor. Mahaveera has its own godown of over 4 lakh sq.ft.

Says Jain, "Making a decent profit is becoming very challenging in trucks logistics due to increasing competition and rising fuel costs, which has made our operation cost dearer by 10-15%. So, there is a lot of pressure on loan repayments, and to hedge our repayment liabilities, we are going for longer loan periods, and using the cash flow for operations. This year, business saw a drop of almost 10-15% due to floods in Kerala and certain other factors. Despite all this, we have to keep our fleet well serviced and replace old vehicles with new ones, and ensure operator comport and fuel efficiency. We replaced 100-150 of our single, multi-axle and flat-bed trailer trucks last year."

He adds, "For timely movement of consignments and to prevent damage in case of an accident, our container trucks are covered with high tensile steel. The operators are also trained by us, the manufacturers and the shippers in handling the trucks, which are fitted with GPS for monitoring their movement and ensuring faster turnaround, and we are also upgrading our operational systems."

However, Jain contends that timely evacuation of the cargo remains a major issue because customers prefer to keep the vehicles as long as possible, with the stored cargo. To curtail this, they are training operators to handle and unload the cargo quickly and efficiently.
