Mini Excavator: Lower Costs & Higher Versatility Drive Demand in India
Mini Excavators with their small tracks are rapidly treading ahead. Their lightweight and compact structure gives them quick access into constricted urban areas where deployment of larger machines is difficult. With their flexibility, easy maneuverability, and agility, they can be deployed even for landscaping and utility jobs in densely populated areas.
Hitherto, the demand for mini excavators was largely confined to specific regions and jobs such as for plantation in the southern regions of India, but the past two years has seen their demand gaining traction across India's construction sites. Applications of mini excavators include foundation work, drainage and pipe laying, landscaping, pavement construction, small demolitions, underground construction, general engineering work, etc. Due to their small footprint, they are being used for accomplishing labor-intensive tasks that were previously carried out by the larger construction machines.
To meet the rising demand along with competition, manufacturers of mini excavators are engaging more proactively with customers during pre-sales to showcase their brand’s value proposition and after-sales services. With about 10 brands vying for attention, customized demonstrations and training sessions are being undertaken by the OEMs to highlight their equipment's capabilities. Manufacturers are also forming alliances with construction companies/contractors for marketing their machines with the assurance of timely technical support.
According to industry observations, over the past few years, the 3T class of mini excavators has experienced consistent growth, while the 2T, which started the mini excavator market in India, is seeing its popularity gradually diminishing. Meanwhile, the 5T class contributes marginally to the construction market. The attractive pricing of the 3T also makes it the preferred choice of customers; in fact, about 80% of mini excavators sold in India are of 3 to 4 tons. The industry estimates that the mini excavator market in India is likely to expand by 5000 units by 2030.
