V.O. Chidambaranar Port Becomes India’s First Major Port to Achieve IGBC Platinum Rating

The Administration Building has been developed in line with the port’s Green Policy and waste management plan. It features rooftop solar panels and a high Solar Reflectance Index roof coating to reduce the urban heat island effect and enhance energy efficiency. Resource efficiency measures include IoT-enabled water meters, indoor air quality monitoring systems, rainwater harvesting and water-saving plumbing fixtures, leading to a 37 percent reduction in potable water consumption. All wastewater is treated through an on-site sewage treatment plant and fully reused.
In a major step toward decarbonisation, the building operates on 100 percent renewable energy, with 89 percent generated through on-site solar power and the remaining sourced from off-site renewable energy. The facility also prioritises occupant health and inclusivity with a no smoking policy, eco-friendly cleaning chemicals, accessible ramps, DAP toilets, electric wheelchairs and lifts equipped with braille and audio assistance. The campus maintains over 70 percent green cover, supported by extensive plantation, and sustainability initiatives are overseen by seven IGBC Accredited Professionals.
