NMDC Reviews Capacity Expansion, Sustainable Mining Initiatives at Donimalai Complex
During a recent visit to the mining complex, the management assessed the progress of key projects, including capacity expansion plans to increase production to 10 MTPA from the Kumaraswamy Mine and 17 MTPA from the Donimalai Complex. The expansion forms part of NMDC's broader objective of becoming a 100 MTPA mining company.
The management also reviewed initiatives focused on the utilisation of low-grade iron ore resources, including iron ore containing up to 35% Fe, iron ore slimes, Banded Hematite Jasper (BHJ) and Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ). Through beneficiation and advanced mineral processing technologies, NMDC is converting these underutilised resources into valuable raw materials, improving mineral recovery while reducing waste generation and environmental impact.
As part of its digital transformation efforts, NMDC reviewed the automated gate management system implemented at the Kumaraswamy Mine. The system enables real-time monitoring and verification of iron ore dispatches, enhancing transparency, operational efficiency and resource security while reducing manual intervention.
NMDC Chairman and Managing Director Amitava Mukherjee, along with Functional Directors, also inaugurated newly developed infrastructure facilities, including high-rise residential towers, aimed at improving employee welfare and living standards.
Commenting on the initiatives, Mukherjee said the company is committed to building future-ready mining operations through innovation, responsible resource utilisation and sustainable development. He added that NMDC's focus remains on supporting India's steel industry with high-quality iron ore while maximising the value of available mineral resources through technology-driven solutions.
The Donimalai initiatives reflect NMDC's strategy of combining production growth with environmental stewardship, operational excellence and community development as it progresses towards its long-term production targets.
