TBM Durga Completes Breakthrough on Kolkata Metro's Joka-Esplanade Corridor

TBM-Durga
Kolkata Metro has achieved a major construction milestone with the successful breakthrough of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) 'Durga' at Victoria Metro Station on the Joka-Esplanade (Purple Line) corridor, completing one of the underground tunnel drives between Khidderpore and Victoria.

The tunnelling work, which commenced on July 10, 2025, was completed with minimal disruption to surface traffic while maintaining high standards of safety and quality. The breakthrough marks a significant step in the construction of the underground section of the Purple Line, one of Kolkata's key Metro expansion projects.

The Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor is expected to improve connectivity between the southern parts of Kolkata and the city's central business district, providing faster, safer and more sustainable public transport while reducing travel time and easing road congestion.

The breakthrough follows another major milestone achieved recently by Kolkata Metro, with the completion of the 62-metre viaduct gap at Chingrighata on the Kavi Subhash-Airport (Orange Line) corridor, removing a critical construction bottleneck.

During his recent visit to Kolkata, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the progress of Metro expansion projects, travelled on the Metro from Jai Hind Bimanbandar to Noapara station, interacted with passengers and Metro staff, and inspected the Chingrighata project site.

The minister also announced that around 60 new-generation Metro trains will be inducted over the next four to five years. He noted that 45 km of new Metro network has been commissioned in and around Kolkata since 2014, compared with 28 km commissioned before 2014.
