Patel Engineering Expresses Grief Over Sikkim Tunnel Incident, Extends Full Support to Rescue Operations

According to the company, the sudden release of suspected methane gas trapped within the rock strata triggered a gas burst/explosion inside the tunnel, generating dense fumes and toxic gases.
PEL said its project team is working in close coordination with the district administration, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local authorities, and other emergency agencies to support the ongoing rescue operations.
The company added that all necessary resources, equipment, and assistance are being deployed to facilitate the rescue efforts. Its site engineering team is working round the clock alongside the authorities to help stabilize the tunnel environment and ensure rescue teams can safely reach the affected location.
PEL further stated that, as part of the project's established safety protocols, gas detection is carried out before the commencement of work. Parameters including methane (CH₄), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), and oxygen levels were monitored, including on the day of the incident.
A detailed investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the incident. The company said it is extending its full support to the rescue agencies and the affected families.
