Ministry of Mines
The Ministry of Mines has recorded the highest-ever annual mineral block auctions in FY 2025-26, with 212 mineral blocks successfully auctioned during the financial year.

The progress was reviewed during the 9th monthly review meeting chaired by Mines Secretary Piyush Goyal with senior ministry officials and representatives from Category-A mineral-bearing states.

According to the ministry, the pace of mineral block auctions has accelerated significantly over the past five years. Between FY 2015-16 and FY 2020-21, a total of 108 mineral blocks were auctioned. In comparison, 364 mineral blocks were auctioned between FY 2021-22 and FY 2024-25, averaging around 90 blocks annually.

The ministry stated that the 212 blocks auctioned in FY26 included 22 critical and strategic mineral blocks, highlighting the government’s focus on strengthening domestic mineral security and supporting India’s clean energy transition.

The meeting also reviewed the operationalisation of auctioned blocks. During FY26, 36 mineral blocks were operationalised, including 28 greenfield and 8 brownfield projects. In contrast, only 58 blocks had been operationalised during the entire period from FY16 to FY25.

The Mines Secretary stressed the need for stronger coordination between the Centre and state governments to expedite statutory clearances and ensure faster commencement of mining operations. He also underlined the importance of critical mineral development in achieving the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and strengthening the country’s mineral supply chain security.
