Under the smart city programs, the Central government has sanctioned Rs.234-cr to build 16 projects under AMRUT for the Srinagar smart city project and out of these, work on four projects has already been started. In addition, Rs. 3,600-cr Smart City project plan is being submitted to the Centre for approval under which 101 projects of city development, Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, who is also the chairperson of the board, said. The Smart City project among other things envisages development of 1,180 acres of old city, rejuvenation and beautification of Jhelum river fronts and adjoining markets, protection and preservation of 200 marked heritage buildings besides developing walkways and improving urban transportation in the Srinagar city. The CM also directed administration officials to explore the possibilities of raising flat type accommodations for the city dwellers so that they don't have to relocate far away and also housing needs of the masses would also be addressed.
