Sarbananda Sonowal Inaugurates Inland Waterways Projects on National Waterway-2 in Dibrugarh

The projects include the Customs and Immigration Complex at Bogibeel, the Customs and Immigration Complex at Dhubri, and the renovated Heritage Building of the Inland Waterways Authority of India at Dibrugarh. The initiatives are designed to strengthen passenger and cargo movement along the Brahmaputra and enhance cross-border trade under the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol routes.
The Bogibeel complex has been developed as a tourist-cum-cargo terminal integrating customs, immigration and IWAI administrative functions within a single facility. It includes dedicated arrival and departure halls, cargo storage areas, administrative blocks and integrated security systems to improve operational efficiency.
The Dhubri Customs and Immigration Complex is expected to enhance regulatory oversight and boost export-import operations in western Assam, positioning Dhubri as a key gateway for inland water transport and cross-border commerce with Bangladesh and Bhutan.
The renovated IWAI Heritage Building in Dibrugarh combines architectural restoration with modern operational upgrades and will support administrative functions on NW-2 while promoting riverine tourism.
Under the National Waterways Act, 2016, 20 rivers in the Northeast have been declared National Waterways, with the Brahmaputra being actively developed as a sustainable economic corridor. The newly inaugurated projects are expected to reduce logistics costs, improve cargo efficiency and reinforce the Brahmaputra’s role in driving regional growth.
