Union Transport Ministry introduces new signage guidelines for expressways

road safety on expressways and national highways
The Union Transport Ministry has issued a groundbreaking directive to enhance road safety on expressways and national highways. To aid commuters and prevent missed exits, the ministry has mandated the installation of larger and more visible signages at frequent intervals. For the first time, highway-owning agencies will be required to set up gantries indicating lane speeds on these high-speed corridors, informing drivers about the designated vehicle types for each lane.

Under the new guidelines, gantries will be placed every 20kms on three-lane carriageways of expressways. The leftmost lane, designed for trucks and heavy vehicles, will have a speed limit of 100 kmph, while the other two lanes will be set at 120 kmph.

Additionally, maximum speed signages for different vehicle categories will be positioned every 5kms, alternating between the shoulders and medians.
