Over 77 Lakh FASTag Annual Passes Issued; NHAI Expands Barrier-Free Tolling

The Annual Pass, available for non-commercial cars, jeeps and vans, is priced at Rs. 3,075 for 2026-27 and allows travel through National Highway and Expressway toll plazas for one year or up to 200 crossings, whichever is earlier. Annual Pass users now account for around 33% of all electronic toll collection (ETC) transactions by cars, jeeps and vans.
The ministry said FASTag now accounts for more than 98% of toll collections on National Highways under the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme. To improve user convenience and operational efficiency, NHAI has also established multiple grievance redressal channels, including the 24x7 helpline 1033, a dedicated email, FASTag issuer bank helplines and the RajmargYatra app.
The government has decided to deploy Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), artificial intelligence and FASTag-based RFID technology instead of introducing GPS-based tolling at this stage. The barrier-free system has been awarded for implementation at 17 toll plazas, of which five are already operational, while bids have been invited for another 104 toll plazas across the country.
The ministry said the ANPR- and FASTag-based system will enable seamless toll collection without requiring vehicles to stop or slow down, improving traffic flow and reducing congestion at toll plazas.
