MoRTH Approves ₹8,300 Crore Rameshwar-Paradeep Coastal Highway in Odisha
The corridor will pass through Khurda, Puri, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur districts, linking key religious, tourism and commercial destinations along Odisha's coastline.
The project comprises a four-lane access-controlled highway from Rameshwar to Konark and a two-lane highway with paved shoulders from Konark to Paradeep. Designed for a speed of 100 kmph, the highway is expected to reduce travel time between Rameshwar and Paradeep by around two and a half hours, improving both passenger and freight movement.
The corridor is expected to strengthen connectivity to major pilgrimage destinations, including the Jagannath Temple in Puri, the Konark Sun Temple and the Ramchandi Temple, making travel more convenient for millions of devotees and tourists visiting the state annually. Improved road infrastructure, coupled with planned airport development in the region, is expected to further enhance Odisha's religious tourism potential.
The highway will also serve as a coastal tourism corridor by connecting beaches, heritage sites and ecological destinations between Puri, Konark and Paradeep. Improved access to biodiversity hotspots, including the Gahirmatha turtle nesting sites, is expected to support eco-tourism while promoting sustainable tourism practices.
Beyond tourism, the project is expected to generate economic opportunities for local communities by supporting the development of hotels, homestays, restaurants, handicraft markets and other tourism-related businesses along the route.
Aligned with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, the corridor will connect nine economic nodes and five logistics nodes, improving access to key infrastructure such as Paradeep Port, Puri Railway Station, the proposed Puri Airport and other regional economic centres. The project is expected to strengthen multimodal connectivity and facilitate faster movement of goods and passengers across Odisha's coastal belt.
