The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation has started the construction work on the 230-km long Kargil-Zanskar national highway to make it an all-weather road after its up-gradation and widening. This is the second continuous year that the Kargil-Zanskar highway will become operational even during the winter season, informed Commissioner Secretary (road and buildings department), Ajeet Kumar Sahu. The widening project with the existing length of 234 km spans across 32 villages. The project has been divided into eight packages for execution. Once completed, it will ensure all-weather connectivity between Kargil and the remote Zanskar valley and will also prove to be a valuable infrastructure asset for the movement of troops and heavy weapons and equipment, especially on the completion of the Shinku La Tunnel.
