NH-22 connects Muzaffarpur, a major economic centre in North Bihar, with Sonbarsa on the India–Nepal border. At Muzaffarpur, it intersects NH-27, part of the East-West Corridor, while its southern and northern links connect economic centres with border transport infrastructure. The upgraded highway is expected to improve access to the nearby Bhithamore Land Port and support the movement of passengers and cargo between India and Nepal.
The existing route passes through densely populated areas, including Muzaffarpur, Muksudpur, Runni Saidpur, Thumma, Dumra, Bhutahi and Sonbarsa. Four-laning is expected to ease congestion and improve traffic flow along these stretches. The highway has been designed for a speed of 100 kmph, with an average operating speed of 80 kmph and no at-grade median openings.
The project includes seven major bridges, including a 340-metre bridge over the perennial Bagmati River, three railway overbridges and two flyovers. These structures are intended to improve traffic continuity at key crossings and reduce conflicts between road and railway movements.
Planned under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, the corridor will strengthen links between agricultural production areas, industrial centres and logistics infrastructure. It is expected to connect five economic nodes, including four industrial estates and a Mega Food Park, supporting manufacturing, food processing and agro-based industries.
Improved access to Muzaffarpur and Sitamarhi railway stations will support multimodal freight movement, while links with NH-31 and NH-122 will strengthen integration with Bihar’s wider transport network. Connectivity towards Barauni’s industrial hub and logistics centres along the Ganga is also expected to support supply-chain efficiency and opportunities for inland waterway transport.
For agricultural producers, better road connectivity is expected to facilitate the movement of produce to markets and processing facilities. More reliable journeys and improved links with railways and industrial centres could help reduce transportation delays and support farm-to-market supply chains.
The upgraded highway will also improve access to religious, cultural and tourism destinations, including Baba Garibnath Temple, Mata Janki Temple, Punaura Dham and the Buddhist Circuit. It will strengthen regional connectivity to Muzaffarpur and Sitamarhi, both identified as aspirational districts.
By increasing highway capacity and strengthening connections between economic centres, agricultural areas, railways and border infrastructure, the NH-22 project is expected to support regional trade, improve mobility and contribute to economic development across North Bihar.
