Govt announces Rs. 30,000-cr road projects in North East
Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced various significant road infrastructure projects worth a total of Rs. 30,000 crore in the northeastern region. Among these initiatives, the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP) is a key highlight, fast-tracked to link south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district with Myanmar’s Sittwe port at an investment of Rs. 1,132 crore. This joint venture between India and Myanmar aims to establish a multi-modal transportation route, facilitating cargo movement from India's eastern ports to Myanmar and further enhancing connectivity to the North-Eastern region of India through Myanmar. The Minister also announced a major road project costing Rs. 20,000 crore, aimed at linking Mizoram with Nagaland, Manipur, and the Myanmar international boundary. Additionally, a 373-km road project connecting Aizawl and Tuipang in southern Mizoram, linking Myanmar through six districts, will cost Rs. 7,361 crore. These projects are set to foster economic growth, trade, and employment opportunities in Mizoram and Myanmar. To address congestion in the state capital of Aizwal, a bypass road project, requiring an investment of Rs. 2,500 crore, is scheduled for construction. This project, spanning 35 km with a 2.5 km tunnel, is expected to be completed by December 2025.
