Decks cleared for ₹5,965-cr port road in Chennai

Decks have been cleared for the ₹5,965 crore Chennai Port-Maduravoyal double-decker road project under PM’s Gati Shakti initiative, informed SP Somasekhar, Regional Officer, NHAI. Around 9 km of the 20.5-km stretch will traverse through the Cooum river and an MoU has been signed between the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the TN government.

On the roadside of the 125 piers, 110 will be retained and of the 20.5-km stretch, the corridor will be limited to 14km from Maduravoyal to Napier Bridge. The elevated corridor will have a capacity to handle 40,000 passenger car units a day. Chennai Port Authority Chairman Sunil Paliwal informed that a study will be undertaken by IIT Madras on the orientation of internal roads in the port so it will not impact vehicular movement. The State Logistics Coordination Committee headed by Chief Secretary is monitoring the development of initiatives under the State Logistic Plan.
