Karnataka Approves Highway and Road Development Projects
The Karnataka Cabinet has approved road and infrastructure development works worth Rs 20,000 crore under the Public Works Department (PWD), covering state highways, major district roads and bridge construction.

Under the State Highway Development Project Phase V, Package 2, roads covering a total length of 1,897 km will be developed. The Cabinet has also approved Rs 6,000 crore for road, bridge and building works across various Assembly constituencies under Appendix-E, along with an additional Rs 3,000 crore allocation for road development.

Another Rs 6,000-crore project has been approved to develop around 3,986 km of roads connecting district headquarters, taluk headquarters and other administrative centres across the state.

The Cabinet also granted administrative approval for a revised estimated expenditure of Rs 3,409.02 crore to the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL) for road development works around Bengaluru under 10 contract packages.

The revised project covers 142.27 km of roads, of which 121.78 km has already been completed. The works are expected to ease traffic congestion in Bengaluru and its surrounding areas and strengthen the city's road network. The project was initially approved in 2017 for developing 155 km of roads at an estimated cost of Rs 2,095 crore, with construction commencing in 2019.

A portion of the Rs 6,000-crore road development programme will be financed through assistance from the Asian Development Bank. The government plans to implement the approved projects over the next two financial years.
