Railways launches Rs. 968-cr cross-border project
The Prime Minister, who attended the plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong recently, is scheduled to inaugurate the project via remote control. The Agartala-Akhaura railway project was finalized in January 2010 when Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina met then Indian PM, Manmohan Singh, during her visit to New Delhi. The Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) ministry has agreed to provide Rs. 580-cr for the new railway project and also released Rs. 150-cr to start the necessary work for acquisition of 67 acres of land for the project. The 15 km (5 km on Indian side and 10 km on Bangladesh side) long Agartala-Akhaura railway project would provide a major boost to the development and economy of the north-eastern region of India and eastern Bangladesh as the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has already completed the preliminary work for the project to start its construction forthwith.
