The Railways has decided to invest ₹18000-crore on rail infra upgrades, stated Railway Board Chairman V K Yadav. The target is to operate high speed trains in two categories -- at 160 kmph on the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata routes, and up to 320 kmph under the ongoing Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. Currently, the average maximum speed of trains on various routes is 99 kmph and the recently introduced Delhi-Varanasi Vande Bharat Express records an average speed of 104 kmph on the Delhi-Kanpur section. The infrastructure upgrades include upgrading of track and signaling system, fencing, and elimination of unmanned level-crossings. The railways is in a "transformation mode" and modernization of the entire operational mechanism. The infra upgrades also include electrification of 68,000-km broad-gauge track network and a 'multi-tracking' project in the 34,000 km very busy rail network. Additional tracks will also be laid on these routes as nearly 96 percent of the country's trains are plying on these rail tracks.
