Uttarakhand gets clearance for ₹2,584-cr dam project
The Jamrani dam project in Uttarakhand, which has been lying in limbo for over four decades, has finally got environmental clearance from the Centre. The dam will fullfil the long cherished dream of the residents of Bhabar area, a region south of the lower Himalayas, and in the Shivalik foothills. The people in Terai-Bhabar and surrounding regions will get gravity water from the project which will also irrigate over 5,000 hectares of land in Uttarakhand, besides providing water to Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts in Uttarakhand for both drinking, irrigation, and for generating 14 mw of hydro power. The dam is located on the Gola river in Nainital district, and will be 9-km-long, 130-metre wide and 485-metre high. The project got technical clearance from the Central Water Commission in February this year, while the Forest Department has handed over 351.49 hectares of land for the project, and the state has sanctioned ₹89 crore for starting the ground work.
